From karenwork at rcn.com Sat Apr 21 22:01:23 2007 From: karenwork at rcn.com (Karen Patterson) Date: Sat Apr 21 22:01:48 2007 Subject: [WLT_Announcements] Reminder! Waltham Earth Day tomorrow, April 22nd AND an Invitation to the Waverley Trani Dedication Ceremony Message-ID: <001601c78482$213e89b0$0a00a8c0@4Q05481> Just a reminder! Please come to the 2007 Waltham Earth Day Celebration Sunday, April 22nd (tomorrow). Events will take place at the UMass Field Station (240 Beaver St) and the Cedar Hill Girl Scout Center (265 Beaver St). Maps and programs are on our web-site at www.walthamlandtrust.org/earthday. Highlights include entertainment for children (Animal Adventures at 11 AM and 1 PM and Earth Tunes at 2:30 PM) and adults (presentations on a new climate change study at UMass and a historical talk about Cornelia Warren, both at 1 PM). The event is free and open to the public. It will run from 10 AM - 4 PM. In addition, Waltham Land Trust members and friends may be interested in the following: Invitation to the Waverley Trail Dedication Ceremony Friday, April 27, 2007; 3:30 to 4:30 pm the "Spray Park" at the DCR Beaver Brook Reservation ~ 650 Trapelo Road, Belmont If you are like most children and adults who live and work in Belmont and Waltham, you may have, until recently, been unaware that the Waverley neighborhood that spans the town line is of international historical significance. Indeed, the natural beauty in a corner of our towns inspired the birth of a global conservation movement. That lack of widespread recognition is about to change. As members of the Waverley Trail Advisory Committee of the Belmont Land Trust, we invite you to the dedication of the Waverley Trail and tree planting ceremony this coming Arbor Day, Friday, April 27, 2007. The event will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Department of Conservation and Recreation's (DCR) Beaver Brook Reservation, at the "Spray Park" just south of the intersection of Trapelo Road and Mill Street in Belmont (next to the Andros Diner). The event will occur rain or shine; if we have heavy rain, guides will be on hand to direct you to the nearby Butler School Auditorium. The ceremony will mark the realization of a three year effort by citizens of Belmont and Waltham, in conjunction with the Belmont Land Trust, the Waltham Land Trust, the Belmont Historical Society, the Town of Belmont, the City of Waltham and the Massachusetts DCR to conceive, design and build a three-quarter mile interpretive trail that celebrates our community and our natural heritage from Waverley Square to the Waverley Oaks. The trail, complete with street banners, kiosks, wall plaques and signposts, tells the remarkable story of Waverley's early history, and of the grove of magnificent white oaks living in what is today the Beaver Brook reservation that inspired the creation of the world's first land trust and the nation's first regional public park commission. We hope you can be on hand to join several distinguished guests, citizens and local school children who will gather for the event. Speakers will include: the Massachusetts Undersecretary of the Environment, Philip Griffiths; the Acting Commissioner of the DCR, Priscilla Geigis; State Senator Steven Tolman; State Representative Will Brownsberger: Belmont Selectman Paul Solomon; YouthBuild founder Dorothy Stoneman and several others. In addition, volunteers from YouthBuild, sponsored by the Eagle Eye Institute, will plant trees in commemoration of Arbor Day 2007 in both Belmont and Waltham. Our focus will be the past, present and future of conservation in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Please join us!
